COLOMBO: Lanka Premier League (LPL), Sri Lanka’s T20 cricket tournament will be held from November 27 to December 17 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota, a statement released Thursday by Sri Lanka Cricket confirms (?).
Hopefully, this is the final word on the matter, what with multiple postponements and recent reports even pointing to the inaugural edition of the tournament being taken offshore – to Malaysia or UAE.
Several rounds of discussions were held between the representatives of SLC and the officials of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health regarding the holding of the tournament due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Accordingly, the government has approved the tournament to be held subject to the health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
“We have a lot of confidence in the future of the tournament because of the government’s support for it. Also, as the tournament is being held only in Hambantota, it will be easier to maintain the Bio-Secure Bubble created for the tournament,” said SLC vice president Ravin Wickramaratne, also the director of the Lanka Premier League.
According to the latest plan, Sri Lanka Cricket will soon announce the revised schedule of the tournament.
