SLC president Shammi Silva to step dpwn: report

IN AN ADMINISTRATIVE SHAKE-UP, Shammi Silva is set to step down as president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), bringing an end to a controversial tenure that began in 2019.

The move comes amid mounting pressure from the Sri Lankan government, poor on-field performances, and longstanding allegations of corruption and mismanagement, a report in Cricbuzz said. Silva is expected to vacate his position following an SLC Executive Committee meeting scheduled around April 28–29, 2026. His exit is reportedly part of a government-led transition within the cricket board.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is understood to be directly overseeing the transition process. Former minister Eran Wickramaratne is widely expected to take charge in an interim capacity.
Authorities may appoint either an interim committee or a “competent authority” until fresh elections are conducted.

Reports indicate Silva was asked to step down by the President, following growing dissatisfaction with cricket administration. The move is being executed under provisions of Sri Lanka’s Sports Law of 1973, which allows government intervention in sports bodies. Silva’s tenure has been marred by persistent allegations of graft and systemic mismanagement, though formal charges remain unclear.

Public outrage and scrutiny have intensified over the years, placing pressure on leadership. Sri Lanka’s recent cricket results have been a major trigger. The team’s struggles have been cited as a key factor behind the government’s intervention. Government interference in cricket boards can violate International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. The ICC has reportedly been informed, with assurances that fresh elections will be held soon to maintain compliance.
