SINGAPORE: SPORTEL could well hold three consecutive spring conventions in Asia due to the region hosting three successive Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics being the big one) as well as the first ever IRB Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019.
SPORTEL chief executive Laurent Puons and sales and marketing agent David Jones confirmed that Sportel’s spring convention would be returning to Asia in 2019 rather than heading to the US, as has been the norm.
Queried as to whether Singapore would again be hosting the convention, Puons revealed to SportzPower last week that three possible host venues had been shortlisted in Macau, Hong Kong and Bangkok, and that the “90 per cent likelihood” was that it would be held in the Las Vegas of Asia.
Puons said they were also considering holding a SPORTELAsia in 2020 (likely venue Singapore), but that has not yet been confirmed.
SPORTEL’s Asia focus has been necessitated as the region will be playing host to a number of international blue riband sporting events over the next few years, the main ones being:
2019 FINA World Championships South Korea
2019 IRB Rugby World Cup Japan
2019 Military World Games China
2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup China
2020 Summer Olympic Games Tokyo
2022 Winter Olympic Games Beijing
Before all that there is the first-ever SPORTELSummit in Miami in May.
SPORTEL aims to have around 250 to 300 participants representing world leaders of sport at the conference and has sent invites to those high-ranking officials whom they wish to attend.
Jones pointed out that though the summit was by “invitation only”, the top-level executives from relevant sports media and marketing industries attending would be paying to be among the delegates.
