NEW DELHI: The Union Sports Ministry has finally ran out of patience with the Indian Golf Union (after five interim extensions over two years that was a seriously long rope the IGU was given).
After the Sports Ministry gave interim recognition to the the national federation for three months last July, the IGU was given time till the end of December to put its house in order and comply with National Sports Development Code.
That deadline came and went with no action of any sort from the IGU which lead to this sorry situation. A Sports Ministry official confirmed to Times of India that the “IGU has been suspended”.
This also means that the staging of the Hero Indian Open, a $1.75 million event scheduled for to be held from March 19 to 22 at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurugram, is up in the air, as too the $500,000 Hero Women’s Indian Open, the country’s lone Ladies European Tour (LET) event, later this year.
In between there is the Tokyo Olympic Games, for which the Indian Olympic Association will now have to take a call.
