MUMBAI: STAR India announced Sunday that it has received permission to broadcast the AFC Cup Under-16 quarterfinal match between India and South Korea on Monday evening at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Malaysia. The broadcaster took to Twitter to confirm the development, in response to a tweet by Joy Bhattacharjya, the former CEO of IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders.
Bhattacharjya had tweeted: “@StarSportsIndia. If the Indian boys win their quarter-finals on Monday in the AFC U16, they will be the 1st ever Indian team ever to qualify on merit for a FIFA World Cup. You support Indian football, please find a way to show the match, you have the rights! @IndianFootball.”
He is referring to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2019 in Peru, which is why the match holds a tremendous amount of significance to the future of the sport in India.
“As part of our commitment to bring you the best of Indian Football, you’ll be glad to know that we have received telecast approval from AFC! The #ADCU16 QF match between India and the Korea Republic will be telecast LIVE on Star Sports 2/2HD on Oct 1 from 6PM onwards,” Star Sports’ response read.
