Under Armour set for India retail innings with running focus

MUMBAI: United States-based sports apparel brand Under Armour is set to launch its operations in India by successfully creating a wholly-owned subsidiary in the country, Economic Times reports.

Overseeing the brand’s expansion in the form of retail stores in metro cities is former adidas vice-president of emerging markets Tushar Goculdas, who joined Under Armour six months ago as managing director for its India operations.

“We are investing in Asia Pacific as there are long-term growth opportunities. We have been concentrating in China over the last few years. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be establishing our retail presence in India,” Under Armour APac MD Jason Archer told the business daily.

Under Armour is already in the process of reaching out to Indian cricketers and testing cricket products in Jalandhar, one of the hotbeds of sports manufacturing in the country, ET, quoting sources, reports.

According to Archer, the company’s initial focus will be on wooing runners and providing training products to aspiring and professional athletes.

“Cricket is a great sport. But we will start operations by selling our global portfolio of training and running products,” he added.

Under Armour is endorsed globally by the likes of swimming legend Michael Phelps, British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and former WWE wrestler The Rock.
