With a brand value of $227.9 million in 2023, cricketer Virat Kohli surpassed Bollywood star Ranveer Singh to reclaim the No 1 spot as India’s most valued celebrity, according to “Celebrity Brand Valuation Report 2023”, released by global consulting firm Kroll.
Virat was No 2 with $176.9 million in 2022. That’s a 30% jump in one year.
Per the Kroll report, the overall brand value of the top 25 celebrities in 2023 is estimated at $1.9 billion, an increase of 15.5% from the previous year.
Aviral Jain, managing director, Kroll says, “Valuation can be subjective, especially when it comes to celebrity assessments, which tend to be abstract. Drawing on our expertise in navigating such complex scenarios, we have crafted a rational and objective framework that underpins this report. Now in its ninth edition, the Kroll Celebrity Brand Valuation 2023 Report is a cornerstone of our thought leadership publications.”
Jain added: “2023 marked King Kohli reclaiming the throne of being the most valued celebrity brand in India backed by his stellar and record breaking on-field performances throughout the year. He marshals a vast army of 375 million social media followers and his brand repertoire has doubled in the last five years.”
Actors Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Alia Bhatt are at No 3, 4 and 5 with a brand value of $120.7m, $111.7m and $101.1m, respectively.
The report says the cumulative number of product brand endorsements by the top 20 celebrities increased to 484 in 2023, a jump of 14.2% from 424 product brands in 2022.
Jain further noted, “Moreover, there is a growing trend of global brands collaborating with Indian celebrities and vice versa. For instance, Gucci’s collaboration with Alia Bhatt, Qatar Airways choosing Deepika Padukone, and Indian companies like Zomato involving Chris Gayle or Infosys partnering with Rafael Nadal exemplify how geographical boundaries are becoming less relevant in today’s interconnected world of entertainment and business.”
