2nd Test in Delhi: Top economists slam sorry state of Indian stadia

Two renowned Indian economists – former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Krishnamurthy Subramanian and former executive director of IMF for India Surjit Bhalla – have offered scathing comments about the pathetic state of stadiums in the country.

Bhalla
Was there as well for a 10 wkts extravaganza- but Kotla Jaitley stadium is an embarrassment beyond compare – even pathetic will be a compliment

It all started with Twitter user Sahil Bhalla (Bhalla’s son?) posting: “I have come to the Feroz Shah #Kotla stadium (*cough cough* Arun Jaitley Stadium) for Day 3 of the India vs Australia Test match!
#INDvAUS #INDvsAUS #CricketTwitter”

To which Surjit Bhalla responded: “Was there as well for a 10 wkts extravaganza – but Kotla Jaitley stadium is an embarrassment beyond compare – even pathetic will be a compliment.”

To this, Subramanian agreed and termed the situation of the Indian stadiums as “pathetic” while tagging Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Union Minister Anurag Thakur, BCCI secretary Jay Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“@BCCI @OfficialBCCI: Agree w/ @surjitbhalla – our stadiums are PATHETIC. Hv gone many times to Hyderabad stadium… How can we treat our fans sooo PATHETICALLY??? I’ve seen Lords, MCG, SCG – they r maintained so well. @ianuragthakur Ji @JayShah: Kuch kariye pls (do something please) @narendramodi @PMOIndia,” he tweeted.

Which kind of set the cat among the pigeons so to speak. Some of the reactions to Surjit Bhalla’s tweet were revealing:

An architectural  monstrosity !! That is the exact word. Kotla stadium is the pits to look at and needs a full change. It is a PAN BAHAR ad !

True, it is. Screen at one end in picture is manually covered by labourers after every over to ensure batsman isn’t distracted. And then uncovered to run an Ad. A small scoreboard in one corner is visible from nowhere. The national capital should boast a world class stadium.

It’s not a stadium, it’s a giant pan masala hoarding

On Sunday, India performed “the last rites” against the hapless Australians for the second Test in the four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The match was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and India took a 2-0 lead in the series.
