FOOD DELIVERY tech companies Zomato and Swiggy received notices from Google for violating its Play Store policies.
The two companies had been promoting cashback schemes through fantasy sports features.
According to the Play Store’s policy, it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting.
“We believe that the notice is unfair, but we are a small company and have already realigned our business strategy to comply with Google’s guidelines,” a Zomato spokesperson informed PTI in an e-mailed response.
Zomato also added the Zomato Premier League will be replaced with a more exciting program by this weekend.
The in-app gamification feature was withdrawn by Swiggy after the notice.
Multiple companies have introduced gamification features on their apps around the IPL to increase customer engagement on their apps and in-turn drive sales.
However, Google had earlier said offering cashback and vouchers alone do not constitute a violation of its gambling policies. “Our policies don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting, including daily fantasy sports in India,” a Google spokesperson had stated to Business Standard.
