MUMBAI: Yuvraj Singh, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket and the Indian Premier League, has been signed up by Toronto Nationals franchise for the Global T20 Canada 2019.
Apart from Toronto Nationals, the second edition of the Global T20 Canada will see five other teams, Vancouver Knights, Winnipeg Hawks, Edmonton Royals, Montreal Tigers and Brampton Wolves competing with each other. Manpreet Gony, the Punjab pacer, will also play alongside Yuvraj in a team which also includes star players like Brendon McCullum, Kieron Pollard and Trent Boult.
The other teams too have seasoned T20 players in their ranks including Sunil Narine and Thisara Perera (Montreal Tigers), Kane Williamson, Faf du Plessis and Ben Cutting (Edmonton Lions), Chris Gayle and Andre Russell (Vancouver Knights), Chris Lynn, JP Duminy and Dwayne Bravo (Winnipeg Hawks) and Darren Sammy, Shakib Al Hasan and Shahid Afridi (Brampton Wolves). The teams will be under the guidance of distinguished coaches like Tom Moody, Stephen Fleming, Geoff Lawson, Phil Simmons and Lalchand Rajput.
Toronto Nationals took to Twitter to make the announcement. The tweet from the official twitter account read: “For all #YuvrajSingh fans! ??
“#TorontoNationals get @YUVSTRONG12 for #GT2019.”
Having sought permission from the BCCI to participate in franchise T20 Leagues abroad, Yuvraj Singh’s signing for the Toronto Nationals was the biggest news to come out of the Global T20 Canada draft.
The signing is a big coup for Cricket Canada and the league’s backers, Mercuri group.
Singh’s name is also being linked to the Euro T20 Slam – hosted jointly by Ireland, the Netherlands and Scotland – which will have its inaugural edition later in the summer.
The Global T20 will be hosted entirely at Brampton, Ontario, and run from 25 July to 11 August. The six teams will play a round-robin format followed by playoffs, comprising 22 matches in total.
