MADRID: LaLiga team Atletico Madrid has created history 60,739 people watched its women’s team match against FC Barcelona on Sunday at its home ground, Wanda Metropolitano.
This is a new world record in women’s club football history, which was helped by the fact that the stadium has a capacity of 68,000.
Atletico’s women’s team usually play their home games at the club’s training ground. However, an excess of demand for tickets forced them to shift the fixture.
Atletico broke the record set last month for a women’s football match in Spain. That game was an away one for the team as they battled it out in front of 48,121 supporters at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao.
The club had priced the Barca match tickets for just 5 euros for the general public and was free-of-cost to all club members.
Atletico’s spokesman reportedly told ESPN FC that over 40 percent of the match tickets on Sunday were paid for.
However, the match wasn’t enough to break the overall world record for any women’s football fixture as 90,185 people had turned up for the FIFA 1999 Women’s World Cup final between USA and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
