Tokyo 2020 seals $200m power deal with British firm Aggreko

TOKYO: The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) Friday announced UK-owned Aggreko Events Services as an official supporter in the third domestic tier of the event’s sponsorship programme. The company has been attributed the category ‘Temporary Electricity Generation.’

Its addition brings the total number of Tokyo 2020 domestic partners to 58, including 15 gold partners, 30 official partners and 13 official supporters (including one official supporter which sponsors only the Paralympic Games), all of whom will play vital roles in the successful delivery of the Games.

Proactive Investors UK reports that the organising committee sealed the deal at a value of $200m with Aggreko’s Japanese subsidiary, in which the company will provide electricity generation and distribution systems to support the Games across 43 competition venues, ensuring reliable power and uninterrupted television broadcast to millions of viewers.

Aggreko has supported high-profile sporting events in 2018 such as the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, European Championships in Glasgow and the Ryder Cup in France.

Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori commented on the partnership: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Aggreko as a Tokyo 2020 Official Supporter. A reliable, secure and resilient power supply is essential to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games, supporting all Games Operations, and we are delighted that we will be able to count on the support of Aggreko, as a company with extensive experience in successfully delivering temporary power services.”

Aggreko MD Robert Wells said: “Aggreko believes electric power opens up the opportunity and creates potential for individuals, communities, industries and societies, and has been providing temporary electricity generation services in the world. In line with above, we have signed an honorable Tokyo 2020 Official Supporter agreement for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, 56 years since the last Games held in Tokyo. With the signing of the Tokyo 2020 Official Supporter agreement for the Tokyo 2020 Games, we wish to contribute to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games by rendering our support to the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.”
