Aus Open semifinalist Chung confirms for Tata Open Maharashtra

Tata PUNE: The Tata Open Maharashtra will be back with its second edition in the city from 31 December 2018 to 5 January 2019 at the Mhalunge Balewadi Stadium. The ATP 250 event has confirmed the presence of World No.26 from South Korea, Hyeon Chung.

The first ever Grand Slam men’s semifinalist from his country, the 22-year-old Chung made headlines at the Australian Open in January 2018 by defeating the now World No.2 Novak Djokovic in the fourth round and another top 10 player, Alex Zverev in the third round. The run was responsible to have made him move from World No.58 to a career high World No.19 mid-year.

Tata Open tournament director, Prashant Sutar commented on the development: “Chung is one of the most exciting talents in tennis today. His consistent run across various tour events, including Australian Open, since winning the inaugural Next Gen ATP Tour Finals last year has makes him a player to watch out for this time at Tata Open Maharashtra.”

It was in November 2017 when he announced his arrival winning the inaugural ATP Next Gen Championships in Milan. Chung went 5-0 in his campaign to win his first ATP World Tour title. What was remarkable about this achievement was it was his first final appearance in an ATP World Tour event and he went all the way
