The appointment of Indian media executive Sanjog Gupta as the International Cricket Council’s new chief executive officer adds to a growing list of Indian administrators currently occupying senior roles at the ICC under chairman Jay Shah.
Among the notable names is Anurag Dahiya, ICC chief commercial officer since January 2020.
Then there is Prabhakaran Thanraj, who is serving as vice president of commercial and operations, while Gaurav Saxena holds the post of general manager of events and corporate communications.
Both Thanraj and Saxena had previously worked with the Board of Control for Cricket in India under Shah. Thanraj joined the ICC in January after a three-year stint at the Asian Cricket Council, where his last posting was as general manager – Events & Commerical. Before his time at the ACC, Thanraj has, at different periods, worked with the BCCI, IMG and Rise Worldwide.
As for Saxena, he earlier served as BCCI’s general manager.
Meanwhile, JioStar’s vice-chairman Uday Shankar, had this to say about the larger implications of Gupta’s move to the ICC. In an internal mail to the Reliance-controlled network’s employees on Monday, Shankar called Gupta a “man for all seasons”.
Shankar further said: “Sanjog has literally grown up with me over the last two decades. He has been one of the most talented, creative, entrepreneurial and trusted colleagues and friends. As much as I am saddened, his new role as CEO of ICC is an important one as cricket needs to be reset for the next leap globally.”
