Cricket, hockey might return at India’s CWG 2030: Report

SEVERAL SPORTS are expected to make a comeback for the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games, to be hosted by India in 2030. A number of traditional disciplines including cricket, hockey, triathlon and squash were dropped from next year’s streamlined Glasgow Games, which will feature only 10 sports.

Glasgow’s program consists solely of athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, judo and lawn bowls.

For 2030, organisers have confirmed that table tennis will return to the schedule, while 3×3 basketball has been moved to a “possibles” list. Fifteen sports remain under review, among them T20 cricket, hockey, shooting, squash, rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball.

The India 2030 organising committee has already secured eight core sports: athletics, swimming, table tennis, lawn bowls, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing. The final program is expected to be confirmed by April next year.

India’s bid, formally approved at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, forms part of the country’s broader ambition to position itself as a future Olympic host and a global sporting hub.
