IPL ‘26 to run from 26 Mar to 31 May: Report

THE 2026 EDITION of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on 26 March, with the final scheduled for 31 May. According to Cricbuzz, the dates were shared with all ten franchises by IPL CEO Hemang Amin during a briefing held ahead of Tuesday’s mini-auction in Abu Dhabi.

While the broad timeline has been confirmed, the detailed match schedule is yet to be announced and is expected to be released in the coming days.

It has, however, been confirmed that defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will feature in the opening match of the season. What remains uncertain is whether the fixture will be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Traditionally, the IPL season opener is staged at the home ground of the defending champions, but the availability of the Bengaluru venue is still under question.

Concerns stem from last year’s tragic stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations, which led to the loss of 11 lives. Since the incident, the stadium has not hosted any matches, and even Women’s World Cup fixtures were moved to alternative venues. Although the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has received conditional clearance from the state government to host IPL matches, final approval will be granted only after all safety and security requirements are fully met. KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad has also assured the revival of the stadium as part of his recently concluded election agenda.

As per protocol, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a meeting with representatives of all ten IPL franchises on Monday, a day before the auction. During the meeting, teams were briefed on the tentative schedule for the upcoming season.
