Mohammedan Sporting’s long wait to win their maiden I-League title finally came to an end on Saturday at Shillong’s SSA Stadium when they defeated Shillong Lajong FC 2-1 in the away match to confirm their status as the 2023-24 season champions.
The Black Panthers have thus secured promotion to the Indian Super League, provided they meet the Indian Club Licensing Premier 1 criteria.
With Mohun Bagan Supergiants and East Bengal having already avoided relegation in the ongoing ISL campaign, Mohammedan Sporting’s promotion means all three Kolkata giants would now be part of ISL 2024-25.
This would mark the first time since the 2013-14 season that all three legacy clubs from Kolkata will feature together in the top tier of Indian football. The I-League win is a perfect ending to Mohammedan Sporting’s revival story.
Coming back to the I-League, the side from Kolkata have now garnered an unassailable 52 points from 23 matches; their closest rivals, Sreenidi Deccan FC, are eight points behind with two games to play.
Mohammedan Sporting’s final but now inconsequential match of the season is against Delhi FC on April 13.
