GAUTAM GAMBHIR has reportedly been offered a route back to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after nearly two years away, following his successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before taking charge as head coach of the senior men’s Indian team.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Gambhir has been offered a triple-role proposal by one of the new stakeholders of the Rajasthan Royals (RR). The offer reportedly includes positions as “partner, mentor and CEO” within the franchise.
However, Gambhir cannot accept the proposal while serving as India’s head coach. A Supreme Court of India ruling, based on the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, bars individuals from simultaneously holding positions with an IPL franchise and the Indian team, citing a conflict of interest.
If Gambhir were to take up the RR role, he would need to step down as India head coach. His current contract with the national side is set to run until after the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Since retiring from playing, Gambhir has been associated with two IPL franchises. He served as mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants from 2022 to 2023, guiding them to the playoffs in both seasons. He then joined KKR in a similar role for their 2024 title-winning campaign before replacing Rahul Dravid as India head coach in July 2024.
