BOARD OF CONTROL FOR CRICKET IN INDIA (BCCI) is expected to release the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 schedule in two phases, with Assembly Elections in early 2026 reportedly prompting the staggered approach. Polls in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam are set to coincide with the tournament window, creating logistical and security challenges.
A split announcement, similar to the model adopted in 2024, would allow the BCCI to confirm fixtures for the opening two to three weeks in venues outside poll-bound states. Once the Election Commission of India (ECI) finalises polling and counting dates for specific phases in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam, the remaining fixtures can be slotted into windows that avoid clashes with voting days.
As per the tentative timeline, Phase 1 of the schedule covering approximately 20 to 25 matches is likely to be announced by late February. Phase 2 could follow in mid-March, after the ECI provides clarity on regional poll dates.
Security deployment remains the primary concern. Assembly Elections in large states such as West Bengal (294 seats) and Tamil Nadu (234 seats) require extensive mobilisation of state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). With security personnel prioritised for election duties, adequate arrangements may not be immediately available for IPL fixtures at key venues including Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Additionally, five major IPL venues, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai, are currently designated as principal host stadiums for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. A phased release of the schedule would provide ground staff additional time to transition pitches, outfields and stadium branding from international tournament specifications to IPL standards.
