AIFF disciplinary panel softens stadium ban for Bagan’s March 6 game

THE FULL STADIUM closure slapped on Mohun Bagan Super Giant for its upcoming ISL game against Odisha FC on March 6 for spectator misconduct during its match against Chennaiyin FC has been partially rescinded.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has declared it will enforce a partial stadium closure on Mohun Bagan following an appeal by the Indian Super League (ISL) club on Tuesday.

For context, the AIFF had sanctioned Bagan for a repeat offence by its spectators during a probationary period of one year.

“The AIFF Disciplinary Committee, an independent judicial body consisting of retired Supreme Court and High Court justices, formed in accordance with the AIFF Constitution, had, on June 3, 2025, sanctioned Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) during the 2024-25 season with a ‘stadium closure’ due to multiple violations of spectator misconduct throughout the season, and in particular, during Match No. 163 of the Indian Super League 2024-25, held on April 12, 2025,” the statement read.

The ISL match referred to in the statement was against Bengaluru FC. “The complaint stated that “fireworks” were launched into the away section from the home stands, where travelling Bengaluru FC supporters were seated, with one such projectile striking the Bengaluru FC club owner.”

The committee then imposed a stadium closure but suspended the sanction for one year under Article 35 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code. The club was placed under probation, with a clear warning that any further misconduct would automatically activate the ban.

Fast forward to the current season, during the February 14 game between Bagan and Kerala Blasters FC, held at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, it was noted that there were “multiple instances of pyrotechnics” used by home spectators.

The incident was deemed a violation under “Article 67 of the Code, alongside ISL League Rules 7.3.8 and 7.5.4”, following which the club was ordered a full stadium closure, with the ability to appeal the decision.

On Tuesday, following the review petition filed by the club, the AIFF declared that for the game the club hosts on March 6 against Odisha FC, spectator access will be restricted to designated sections of Salt Lake Stadium.
