Karnataka explores hosting Global Chess League S4 in Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has begun discussions to bring the fourth edition of the Global Chess League (GCL) to Bengaluru, a move that could further cement the city’s reputation as one of India’s leading destinations for international sporting events.

A delegation from the league met Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister, G. Parameshwara, to explore the possibility of Bengaluru hosting the upcoming season of the world’s premier franchise-based chess competition.

According to a statement from the Deputy Chief Minister’s office, the Global Chess League delegation sought the support of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports for staging the event in Bengaluru. The meeting was attended by Global Chess League Chief Executive Officer, Gourav Rakshit, international chess player, Prachura P. P., and other representatives of the league.

During the discussions, Parameshwara reaffirmed the Karnataka government’s commitment to attracting prestigious international sporting events to the state. He said hosting the Global Chess League would significantly strengthen Karnataka’s sports ecosystem, boost the state’s global sporting profile and provide opportunities for greater engagement with the international chess community.

The Global Chess League, jointly promoted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and Tech Mahindra, has quickly established itself as one of the world’s leading professional chess leagues since its launch in 2023. The competition features a unique franchise-based format, with mixed-gender teams comprising some of the world’s highest-rated grandmasters competing in rapid chess.

Season four of the league has already generated significant interest following the recently concluded player draft, which featured top international stars. The tournament has become a key commercial property in global chess, combining elite competition with team ownership, broadcast partnerships and corporate sponsorships.

For Bengaluru, hosting the Global Chess League would further enhance its growing portfolio of international sporting events. The city has developed into a major hub for technology, innovation and sports administration, while Karnataka has increasingly sought to attract global competitions as part of its broader strategy to promote sports tourism and strengthen the state’s sporting infrastructure.

From a sports business perspective, bringing the Global Chess League to Bengaluru would represent a significant commercial opportunity. The event is expected to generate revenue through sponsorships, broadcasting, hospitality, tourism and fan engagement while reinforcing Bengaluru’s credentials as a destination capable of hosting premium international sporting properties.
