DENMARK WILL HOST the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier B from July 8 to 14, marking the country’s first senior International Cricket Council (ICC) event to be hosted in the country.
The tournament will feature nine European nations competing for a place in the next stage of qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, highlighting the continued growth of cricket across the continent.
The tournament forms part of the ICC’s Europe qualification pathway for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Thirty European nations are participating across three sub-regional qualifying events in Cyprus, Denmark and Finland, with the winners advancing to the Europe Qualifier in 2027. Jersey has already secured its place in the next round after winning Sub-Regional Qualifier A, while the final Sub-Regional Qualifier C will be held in Finland later this year.
The nine teams competing in Denmark are hosts Denmark, Belgium, Estonia, Gibraltar, Hungary, Norway, Romania, Serbia and Türkiye. They have been divided into two groups, with Belgium, Romania, Gibraltar and Serbia in Group A, while Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Estonia and Türkiye make up Group B. The winners of each group will meet in the final, with the champion progressing to the Europe Qualifier.
Matches will be played at Svanholm Cricket Ground and Køge Cricket Ground, two of Denmark’s leading cricket venues. The tournament is expected to provide valuable international exposure for emerging European cricket nations while showcasing Denmark’s capability to host ICC events after successfully staging the ICC Under-19 Europe Qualifier in 2024.
Alex Olsen, Chief Executive Officer of Dansk Cricket Forbund, described the event as a landmark moment for cricket in Denmark. He said hosting a senior ICC qualification tournament reflects the continued growth of the sport in the country and provides an opportunity to showcase Denmark’s facilities, volunteers and cricketing community to teams and supporters from across Europe.
The qualification pathway also reflects the ICC’s broader strategy of expanding cricket in emerging markets. While established European nations such as England, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands will enter the qualification process at a later stage because of their participation in the previous ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the sub-regional tournaments provide Associate Members with a competitive platform to progress towards global events.
