The TATA Indian Premier League game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings on Monday has set a new concurrency viewership record, IPL digital rights holder JioCinema has asserted.
As per an official release issued by the Reliance-controlled streamer Tuesday, 2.4 cr (24 million) viewers came together to watch MS Dhoni’s CSK defend against RCB in the high-octane Southern Derby at the Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Match 24 of the ongoing IPL 2023 thus breached the earlier benchmark for concurrent viewership of 2.2 cr that, as per JioCinema, was registered five days earlier on April 12th in the match between CSK and Rajasthan Royals (with Dhoni being the common denominator in both games).
Match 24 of the season kicked off with expectations of another run-fest at RCB’s home ground and the four-time IPL champions who were put in to bat first didn’t disappoint. Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube amassed a bulk of CSK’s 226 runs, striking ferociously at 180+ each.
In response, RCB lost two early wickets before Faf du Plessis and ‘Big Show’ Maxwell accounted for 136 runs that put the boys from Bangalore back on track. The match went down to the wire with 19 needed off the final over when JioCinema registered its highest concurrency yet of 2.4 Cr. Under the ice-cool guidance of Dhoni, CSK registered an eight-run win. The 444-run southern derby concluded with CSK bagging two crucial points in RCB’s backyard.
