Lionel Messi’s World Cup winning Instagram post most liked ever

A gallery of Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina’s World Cup win has become the most-liked Instagram post ever.

Hours after posting it, the footballer received more than 65 million likes – and the number is constantly rising. It currently stands at 69m+ likes and counting.

And the previous record was held by? A simple picture of an egg (57,846,789 likes) posted by Chris Godfrey.

The Argentina icon’s Instagram World Cup photo carousel is obviously the most liked Instagram post made by a sportsperson. It beat out Ronaldo’s iconic photo of the two of them playing chess. 

Messi’s photo of him holding the FIFA World Cup trophy is the first in a carousel of photos of the jubilant Argentina team at the Lusail Stadium. 

Messi’s post read: “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!! ?? So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it……

“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians… We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!!”

Argentina defeated France on penalties in Sunday’s final for the ages – their first World Cup triumph in 36 years.

After the World Cup final, Guinness World Records posted a series of records broken by Messi:
26 – most World Cup matches played
11 – most World Cup Man of the Match awards
19 – most World Cup appearances as captain
5 – most appearances in World Cup tournaments by a male player
First person to assist (a goal) at five different World Cups
