Alphabet picks up IPL rights tender document

MUMBAI: Talk about leaving it till the very end. Literally on the last day as it were, Google parent Alphabet reportedly purchased the Invitation To Tender (ITT) document for the media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The ITT was available for purchase till May 10.

Google owns streaming and video platform YouTube and joins a handful of parties that have reportedly picked up the IPL ITT.

As per reports, the entities that have purchased the ITT other than Alphabet include Star India Pvt Ltd, Viacom 18 Media Private Limited, Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited, Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, Sporta Technologies Pvt Ltd (Dream 11), Supersport International Pty Ltd and Sky UK Ltd.

Disney currently holds the rights through its subsidiary Star India, which had won the rights from 2018-2022 in a $2.5 billion deal.

The big names missing from this though are Indian telecom majors Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. SportzPower is presuming that as Viacom 18 is a sister company of Reliance Jio there was no need to make a separate purchase but it would certainly be highly surprising if Airtel has not bought the ITT.
