Ashwin eyes overseas franchise cricket after IPL retirement

FOLLOWING HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE, Indian spin-bowling great Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly keen to continue his career in franchise cricket around the world.

According to Telegraph Sport, England’s The Hundred could be his next big destination, with the 2026 edition expected to feature his name.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) enforces a strict policy prohibiting active domestic cricketers from participating in overseas leagues. This means Ashwin would only be eligible to play abroad after stepping away from the IPL. A recent precedent was set by fellow Tamil Nadu cricketer Dinesh Karthik, who, after retiring from the IPL in 2024, turned out for Paarl Royals in the SA20 during the 2025 season.

Ashwin has not yet confirmed his participation, and it remains uncertain whether a franchise will secure his services. The highest salary bracket in The Hundred is set at £200,000 (approximately Rs 2.35 crore), a figure well within the range for a player of Ashwin’s calibre.

If the deal goes through, it would mark a new chapter in the career of one of India’s most decorated spinners.

The 37-year-old played 221 IPL matches across his career, collecting 187 wickets, which makes him the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. His consistency and variations played a vital role for whichever franchise he represented, from Chennai Super Kings to Rajasthan Royals.
