Asian Games: India to send cricket teams

MUMBAI: The BCCI Apex Council has approved the participation of Indian cricket teams in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou.

A second-string men’s team will compete from September 28, while a full-strength women’s team will be selected for the event starting on September 19.

Cricket has been played in the Asian Games only two times. The Indian cricket team did not participate in either edition.

The Asian Games cricket competition coincides with a crucial period for the men’s team, as India will be hosting the ODI World Cup from October 5.

Despite the challenges posed by a crowded international schedule, the BCCI aims to successfully field teams in both categories and contribute to the national cause.

Cricket has featured at the Asian Games twice – in 2010 and 2014 – but India did not send a team on both occasions due to international commitments.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have won a gold medal each in the men’s cricket tournaments while Pakistan clinched the title in the women’s event in both editions.
