GOLD COAST: Australian company Surf Lakes International Limited will be constructing the world’s first full-scale multi-break surfing wave pool in the coastal city of Queensland.
The pool is in the final phase of construction and when ready, it will produce more than 2,400 waves per hour with waves of up to 2.4 metres (8ft) face height and make 8 breaks in total — more than any other wave pool. Each wave is shaped differently, thus creating waves of multiple sizes and types simultaneously, which is an innovation.
However the first site will not contain infrastructure as it will initially be used as a demonstration site to refine the technology and provide demos to potential licensees, media and shareholders. The company claims to have received over 100 enquiries from regions including USA, Asia, Europe, UK, Middle East, Brazil and within Australia to gain the license for this technology to be operated anywhere in the world.
Former surfing world champions Mark “Occy” Occhilupo and Barton Lynch have been roped in as its brand ambassadors and will be amongst the first to surf it once complete. Commissioning and testing is expected to begin in September.
Surf Lakes has raised 11 million AUD ($8.16 million) to fund the pool’s development, design and construction with the company’s Director and second largest shareholder, Reuben Buchanan playing a crucial role in the same.
