BCCI media rights for 2023-27 cycle to be split a la IPL: Report

Following the windfall gains the BCCI made by splitting of digital and TV rights for IPL’s 2023-27 cycle, the Indian cricket board has reportedly decided to follow the same template for international cricket to be played in India across the next five-year cycle.

“While we are still finalising the contours of the BCCI media rights auction, we will be unbundling the media rights this time by selling TV and digital rights separately,” a BCCI official is quoted as having said in report published by Economic Times .

“While we are still finalising the contours of the BCCI media rights auction, we will be unbundling the media rights this time by selling TV and digital rights separately,” said official told the business daily.

The move is expected to allow the cricket board to gain maximum value, a BCCI official has been quoted as saying. The value of big cricket properties has also doubled in the country, the senior member of the cricket body has remarked, as per the report.

The ET report added that the BCCI expects the auction process to be completed by July ahead of the three-match ODI series between India and Australia.

“The BCCI media rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely the process will start with the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told the media recently.

For the record, BCCI raked in Rs 48,390 crore with the splitting of digital and TV rights for IPL’s 2023-27 cycle. In the auction that took place in June 2022, Disney Star won the India subcontinent TV rights for Rs 23,575 crore, while Viacom18 bagged the digital rights for Rs 20,500 crore.
