BCCI media rights likely after Sony-Zee merger: report

MUMBAI: BCCI may wait for for the proposed merger of the Sony and Zee networks to be completed before issuing a tender document to sell media rights foer the Indian team’s bilateral series’ rights.

According to a report in the Economic Times, BCCI may not come out with a tender document to sell media rights for this series immediately after the Indian Premier League (IPL). The report added that it was still not certain if BCCI will sell the rights for four years or a different tenure. 

Sony used to broadcast IPL from the first edition till 2017 when Star (now Disney Star) won the rights. In addition to this, Sony Sports Network also holds broadcasting rights for games from England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.  

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) is reportedly in talks with creditors to pay back debts and clear all hurdles in the Zee-Sony merger. However, as per last media reports, Zee may approach the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the NCLT order directing NSE, BSE to reassess their approvals given for the merger.
