Parliament was notified on Tuesday that the gross GST revenue collection from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24 amounted to Rs 2,038.55 crore.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary revealed that BCCI, the apex body promoting cricket in India and an autonomous entity under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975, attracted a GST rate of 28 percent for admissions to events like the Indian Premier League. He stated that despite BCCI’s claims for tax exemption under Section 11 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, relating to charitable institutions, the Income Tax department has denied the exemption, with the issue now sub judice.
Chaudhary also clarified that BCCI does not receive any grants from the Ministry of Sports. In another query, he mentioned that between July 2017 and June 2024, Gujarat witnessed 13,494 GST evasion cases leading to the arrest of 214 persons.
