BCCI ups fan capacity at stadia for IPL games to 50%

MUMBAI: The ongoing Tata Indian Premier League, which is being hosted wholly in Maharashtra at least up to the knockout stages, will see more than 50% capacity crowds at the four venues for upcoming matches.

Although the initial permission from the state government was only for one-fourth of the stadium size, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Maharashtra Cricket Association to increase the crowd attendance in the stadiums to 50% from April 5.

The decision follows on from the notification issued by the  Maharashtra government on Thursday withdrawing all Covid-19 restrictions imposed under the Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Diseases Act in the state from Saturday, when Gudi Padwa – the Maharashtrian New Year — will be celebrated.

While the government advised the people to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, wearing a mask is no more mandatory but has been made optional.

As per estimates, the Wankhede will now allow have 10,000 people, neighbouring Brabourne Stadium, with a capacity of around 28,000, will have up to 16,000 while the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, larger in size, will allow 44,000 fans. The Maharashtra Cricket Stadium in Pune will now have a fill of 24,000.
