MANCHESTER: Premier League club Manchester United announced Tuesday that it has ended the tenure of its head coach Jose Mourinho with immediate effect. As a result, a new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club is expected to conduct a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.
The 55-year-old Portuguese had replaced Dutchman Louis Van Gaal at the helm of the ‘Red Devils’ in May 2016 on a three-year contract, extending it earlier this year to the end of the 2019-2020 season.
However, a string of poor results in the Premier League this season, has seen United slump to the sixth position as Mourinho’s fate was sealed with the club’s loss to archrivals Liverpool 1-3 at Anfield. This was their first loss in nine matches against Jurgen Klopp’s men.
United’s Champions League run is on a knife’s edge as well since it will be clashing with Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint Germain in the Round of 16, following their recent defeat to Valencia, which is ranked 15th in the La Liga at present.
