GUWAHATI: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) plans to set up of one of the BFI’s eight residential satellite academies at Guwahati.
BFI president Ajay Singh told The Telegraph that one of the proposed academies will be set up in the Northeast of the country and that Assam is making a strong case to be the home for the academy, “as many championships are being held here and Guwahati is being projected as the sports capital of the country.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the AIBA (International Boxing Association) Youth Women’s World Boxing Championship here, Singh however said that the BFI was currently focussing on setting up the central academy for which a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the BFI, the Sports Authority of India and the AIBA.
Apart from being the academy frontrunner, Guwahati will also be the home to one of the teams that will participate in the BFI Boxing League starting in June 2018, the report notes.
