Borussia Dortmund launches its 1st grassroots initiative in India

MUMBAI: Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund introduced an international coaching camp in partnership with the Western India Football Association (WIFA) in the city on Wednesday.

This is the first ever grassroots initiative taken by the German football club in India. The camp was kicked off at the Cooperage Football Staidum by ex-Germany captain and legend Lothar Matthäus, who is also in India as part of the ‘Bundesliga Legends’ Tour.

His India tour itinerary takes in two Indian Super League (ISL) games (in Kochi and Mumbai) as well as Reliance Youth and Sports Foundation (RYSF) camps.

25 children from across schools in Mumbai from the age of 7-14 will be participating in the coaching camp which will last till December 9. The camp has been organised by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) with the support of Borussia Dortmund’s sponsors such as Evonik and Puma.

The IGCC has extended this opportunity to some financially underprivileged children who will get professional coaching via the camp. It will also be holding ‘coach the coaches’ sessions free of cost for 40 local coaches, which will be conducted by two homegrown coaches from the Bundesliga club.
