THE BIG BASH LEAGUE is likely to open its new season at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium in the second week of December 2026, after Cricket Australia seems to have received positive signals from the BCCI following months of negotiations.
CA had been exploring the possibility for the past three months, with the BCCI initially unreceptive before shifting its position. A five-member CA delegation has since travelled to Chennai to inspect the stadium during CSK’s final IPL home game, media reports said.
It is reported that a CA representative stopped short of confirming the development said, “We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to deepen the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI.”
Chennai had been CA’s first-choice venue from the outset, with talks running in parallel with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. BCCI president Mithun Manhas met the CA delegation in Chennai, alongside representatives from the Australian trade community. While early discussions had floated the possibility of hosting more than one match, scheduling constraints mean it is likely to be limited to the opener, which could feature defending champions Perth Scorchers.
December presents a logistical challenge, as Chennai’s peak monsoon season runs through that month. Last year, R Ashwin had signed with Sydney Thunder and was set to become the first Indian to feature in the BBL before injury ruled him out.
