THE BIG BASH LEAGUE (BBL) is poised to make history by staging its first-ever overseas match, with Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers expected to open the 2026–27 season in Chennai.
According to a report by in Code Sports, the landmark fixture is likely to be announced by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his visit to Australia, subject to the completion of the remaining commercial and regulatory agreements.
If confirmed, the match will be played on December 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, marking the first time in the BBL’s 16-year history that an official league fixture will be held outside Australia. The move represents a major milestone in Cricket Australia’s efforts to expand the competition’s international footprint and tap into the world’s largest cricket market.
The proposed fixture would feature Melbourne Renegades and five-time BBL champions Perth Scorchers in the season opener. Cricket Australia has reportedly been working closely with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), relevant government authorities and commercial stakeholders to finalise the logistics and approvals required to stage the match in India.
The initiative forms part of Cricket Australia’s broader international growth strategy for the Big Bash League. While the competition has traditionally been played exclusively across Australian venues, administrators have increasingly explored opportunities to expand the league’s global reach by hosting marquee fixtures in overseas markets with strong cricket audiences.
India represents the BBL’s largest international viewership market, with millions of fans regularly following the tournament through broadcast and digital platforms. Hosting a match in Chennai would provide Cricket Australia with a unique opportunity to deepen fan engagement, attract new commercial partners and strengthen relationships with Indian broadcasters and sponsors.
For Chennai, the proposed match would add another major international event to the city’s sporting calendar. The MA Chidambaram Stadium, home to Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings, is one of India’s most iconic cricket venues and has hosted numerous ICC tournaments, bilateral internationals and IPL matches over the years.
Although the proposal is yet to receive formal confirmation, the planned announcement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Australia visit signals that negotiations are at an advanced stage. If the remaining agreements are finalised, the December 12 clash between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers could become one of the most significant milestones in the history of the Big Bash League, opening a new chapter in the international expansion of franchise cricket.
