Commonwealth Games, Olympic bids decision likely next month: PT Usha

INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION (IOA) president PT Usha has announced that a final decision regarding India’s bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games is expected next month. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony honouring India’s Paris 2024 Olympic medallists, Usha shared that discussions and presentations have progressed positively.

On being asked about India’s bids for hosting the 2030 CWG and the 2036 Olympics, Usha said, “Everything went on well, and we hope that we will be able to get it. It will be decided next month.”

India formally presented its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games to the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee in London on 23 September. The 2030 Games hold special historical value, marking 100 years of the Commonwealth Sport Movement, with Ahmedabad positioned as India’s proposed host city.

Additionally, India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Under Usha’s leadership, the IOA submitted a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October 2024, signalling India’s ambition to bring the Games to the country for the first time.

During the felicitation ceremony, the IOA presented cash rewards to all medallists and their coaches in recognition of their achievements. Neeraj Chopra received Rs 75 lakh, Manu Bhaker Rs 50 lakh and Rs 37.5 lakh, Sarabjot Singh Rs 37.5 lakh, Swapnil Kusale Rs 50 lakh, Aman Sehrawat Rs 50 lakh, and the Indian men’s hockey team Rs 10 lakh (main squad) and Rs 5 lakh (reserve players).
