MUMBAI: The newly minted Ahmedabad franchise of the Indian Premier League sure is taking it slow as far as its brand proposition is concerned. Three days ahead of the IPL mega auction, the CVC Capital Partners-owned team Wednesday revealed its name as the Gujarat Titans, though still without a logo.
Debuting in the 15th season of the IPL, the Gujarat Titans will has one advantage going right off the blocks as it were. Its home turf boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium, with a seating capacity of 110,000.
Siddharth Patel, representing team owner CVC Capital Partners, said: “Our core philosophy of being both a courageous and open hearted team has inspired every decision as we built this franchise from the ground up. We want this group to achieve great things for Gujarat and its many passionate fans, which is why we have chosen the name ‘Titans’. Our aim for this cricketing franchise is to be one of the most inspiring and inclusive anywhere in the world, which will help to underpin its long-term success and reputation.
“As we approach the league’s mega auction, we are confident that we will be able to put together the right combination of players going into the new season. We want individuals that are not only highly skilled but who are inspired to be Titans of the game. We look forward to starting on our journey with the passion and support of the people of Gujarat, and hope to inspire and win over new fans from all over India and the world.”
Hardik Pandya has been appointed as team captain, with Afghan spin wizard Rashid Khan and young batting talent Shubman Gill also selected. The cricket team management will be led by Vikram Solanki, who will hold the position of director of Cricket, with Ashish Nehra as the head coach. Gary Kirsten will act as the Titans’ mentor and batting coach.
Titans will be based out of Ahmedabad, and captain by Hardik Pandya
Titans will have Rs 52 crore in their purse for the auction, having spent Rs 38 crore thus far on Pandya (Rs 15 crore), Rashid (Rs 15 crore) and Gill (Rs 8 crore).
