Discovery India head Karan Bajaj resigns

MUMBAI: Karan Bajaj, the senior vice-president and GM of Discovery Communications India and South Asia has called it quits nearly two years after joining the organization, Exchange4Media reports. The news agency found access to an email sent by JB Perrette, President and CEO of Discovery Network International to the Indian arm which confirmed the development.

“I want to let you know that Karan has decided to move on to pursue his own entrepreneurial ambitions. Karan has embodied many of our company’s guiding principles…purposeful as he passionately lead a bold wing to create a new type of purpose driven GE channel in India with Jeet; a creative dreamer who believed we could invest in a great team, one who could take our small kids channel from the lowest rankings to being a top three kids network; consumer obsessed by launching new digital products that focus on making our brands and content more relevant to India’s exploding digital consumers.

“I want to thank Karan for his dedication and contributions to Discovery over the last two years and we wish him all the best as he embarks on his next chapter.

“Karan has agreed to continue to stay in his current role and lead our India team and business until we select a replacement, so for the next few months it will be business as usual.”

Bajaj could be considered pivotal for the steady growth of Discovery branded sports channel DSport in India, which was launched in early 2017.

Back then, he told Best Media Info that DSport will give due attention to ‘underserved sports’ in the country and aimed at bringing the best of sporting action to 80-90 million households.

DSport will also be the official broadcaster of the first season of the upcoming Indo International Premier Kabaddi League in January next year.
