FIFA HAS INFORMED the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that it has “no objection” to postponing its upcoming elections from September to December 2026, providing a significant administrative window for governance reforms within Indian football.
The AIFF, India’s apex football governing body, had originally scheduled its elections for September 2026. However, following internal deliberations and alignment with national regulatory changes, the federation sought to defer the process by three months, a report in The Times of India said.
FIFA, the global governing body, has now formally approved the move, stating it has no objections to the revised December 2026 timeline. The primary driver behind the postponement is the need to ensure compliance with India’s National Sports Governance Act, 2025, which mandates structural and electoral reforms across all National Sports Federations (NSFs).
Key requirements include restructuring of governing bodies, alignment of constitutions and bye-laws with new legal provisions, and implementation of updated electoral procedures and eligibility norms. The Sports Ministry had earlier allowed all federations, including AIFF, to defer elections until December 31, 2026, as a transitional measure to implement these reforms.
FIFA’s approval is crucial because AIFF is a FIFA-affiliated body and must adhere to international statutes and any deviation from governance norms can invite sanctions, including suspension. India has previously faced FIFA suspension (notably in 2022) over governance issues, making compliance a priority.
