MUMBAI: French sportswear brand Decathlon became the number one sports retail brand in the country by earnings in the financial year 2017-18, the Economic Times reports.
Referencing regulatory documents sourced from research platform Veratech, ET reports that with revenues of Rs 12.78 billion for the year to March 31 2018, Decathlon also became India’s second largest single-brand retailer after Chinese mobile major Xiaomi.
Another significant milestone for the French sportswear retailer, which set up shop in the country in 2009, was that it declared its first ever operational profit of Rs 3.38 million.
In comparison Puma clocked Rs 11.57 billion sales in 2018, while its bigger German rival adidas reported Rs 11.32 billion in revenues. Coming in a distant fourth among the international majors was US giant Nike at Rs 8.28 billion.
With 70 large, warehouse like stores operating in India, Decathlon’s product pricing is about 30-40% lower than competing products and that has played major role in the brand’s growth in the Indian market.
