NYON: UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin declared that Germany has been selected to host the Euro 2024 championships at a ceremony held at the European governing body’s headquarters in the Swiss city on Thursday.
Germany’s main challenger was Turkey as the 17-member UEFA Executive Committee studied and analyzed the final presentations of the two countries’ football associations to independently vote in the presence of a notary. Germany received 12 votes in comparison to Turkey’s 4.
“Let me offer my congratulations to both the German and Turkish football associations for their excellent bids.
“I am really looking forward to another celebration of the best of European national team football in 2024, and I know that Germany will be fantastic hosts and that we will see a wonderful tournament both on and off the pitch.” Ceferin said after the announcement.
The president of the German Football Association (DFB), Reinhard Grindel, said: “I would like to thank the UEFA Executive Committee for its trust and confidence. I am fully aware of the responsibility and how much this tournament means to UEFA. Tomorrow we will start doing all we can to meet the high expectations you have of us.”
This win will ensure that Philipp Lahm, the FIFA World Cup 2014 winning captain will be the Tournament Director of the Euro 2024 a decade after he lifted the biggest prize in football for Germany.
It will also be the country’s first significant football event to be hosted since the FIFA World Cup 2006, which was won by Italy.
