ZURICH: UEFA, European football’s governing body confirmed on Monday that its Executive Committee will appoint the host nation of the Euro 2024 competition during a ceremony on 27 September at its headquarters in the Swiss city of Nyon.
UEFA will be publishing an evaluation report on 21 September considering the bids of two nations, Germany and Turkey. At the ceremony, both the countries will present their bids in the form of a video and a 15-minute Q and A session. Followed by which, the committee will examine all these to make a final vote.
It was earlier reported that should Germany win, the DFB has made its intentions clear of naming former World Cup winning captain, Philipp Lahm as its Tournament Director. It will also mean that it is the first major football event that the country would host since the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and a European championship event for the first time since 1988 when it played and hosted as West Germany during the final years of the Cold War.
On the other hand, Turkey has never hosted a Euro event before and could receive a major shot in the arm with this win as its capital city Istanbul has been named as the hosts of the 2020 Champions League final. It had previously hosted the 2005 final between Liverpool and AC Milan in which the Premier League side emerged victors.
At the same event, the governing body will also name the host nations of the UEFA Women’s Futsal Euro 2019 and UEFA Under-19 Futsal Euro 2019 events respectively as well.
