MUMBAI: The inaugural edition of the ‘Ironman’ in India will be held in Goa on 20 October, for which 1,000 registrations, including from women participants, have already been received, the event organisers told Press Trust of India.
The first ever Ironman India is one of the qualifying events for the World Championships in New Zealand next year, and according to the event’s official website, registrations have already closed.
Participants need to swim 1.9 kms, cycle 90 kms and run 21.1 kms to complete the Ironman 70.3, for which registrations have come from 20 countries. The youngest participant for the race is aged 18 while the oldest is 61.
Of the 1,000 participants registered, 10% are women, while 45% of them are aged 40 years or above.
Ironman, which was started with a single event in 1978, now has over 230 events across 53 countries.
In Fall 2015, World Triathlon Corporation and the Ironman brand were acquired by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group. Wanda Group reached an agreement to purchase 100% of equity for $650 million and the assumption of debt from former owners Providence Equity Partners.
