MUMBAI: Further validation (if any was needed), of India’s obsession with cricket was on show Wednesday, with search engine giant Google India making public its ‘Year In Search 2020’.
From the global pandemic to the history-making US elections, the Year in Search continues to recapitulate the top search trends, offering a unique perspective to the questions internet users have asked on Google Search.
And as was the case in 2019, it was cricket that ruled. The top trending query overall in the year was the Indian Premier League (IPL) and NOT the COVID-19 pandemic, which came in second. For the record, the top trending query on Google Search last year was the ‘ICC Cricket World Cup’.
IPL, which was also the most searched sporting and news event, was followed by the coronavirus, US election results, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammann Nidhi (PM Kisan Scheme), Bihar election results and Delhi election results in the overall top trending query on Google.
Specific to sports, and aside from the IPL, it was international events that held sway in India in 2020. UEFA Champion League, English Premier League, French Open and La Liga, in that order, were among the most searched sporting events, PTI reports.
