Govt moves SC following controversial Archery Association elections

NEW DELHI: The Indian Sports Ministry has taken its fight with the Archery Association of India (AAI) to the highest level, approaching the Supreme Court (SC) on the basis of the association’s elections being controversially conducted, Indian Express reports.

The ministry has submitted a plea for the court to remove amendments made to the AAI constitution, which goes against the National Sports Code 2011 as it doesn’t permit public servants from holding office in a National Sports Federation (NSF). Besides this, it wants fresh elections being held.

Last month, ex-Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and United Nations officer BVP Rao from Assam was appointed AAI President as per elections held under the supervision of former chief election commissioner of India, SY Quraishi who was appointed by the Delhi High Court for this purpose in August 2018.

Quraishi, a former sports secretary, made numerous, wide-spread changes to the AAI constitution, taking a cue from recommendations made by Justice RM Lodha in the BCCI case as well as the old and revised versions of the government’s sports code.

The Supreme Court is set to hear the plea in the second week of February.
