CRICKET CANADA HAS described its suspension by the ICC as “unexpected” but emphasised that it respects the ICC’s decision and is committed to full compliance. The board stated that it had already begun implementing corrective measures after receiving earlier ICC notices concerning governance, financial oversight, and administrative shortcomings.
According to the organisation’s statement, immediate governance reforms have been initiated, financial oversight mechanisms are being strengthened, administrative deficiencies identified by the ICC are being addressed and internal investigative, reform efforts are being accelerated, and reporting and compliance systems are being upgraded.
The suspension does not immediately prevent Canadian teams from competing internationally. The ICC said national teams will remain eligible for ICC-sanctioned tournaments to ensure players are not penalized for administrative failures. Funding for team operations will continue through a controlled mechanism overseen by the ICC.
Cricket Canada has also stated that domestic programs not directly affected by the suspension are expected to proceed as scheduled during the 2026 season.
The ICC will provide Cricket Canada with a set of conditions that must be satisfied before membership can be restored. Progress will be monitored by an ICC normalization committee working alongside ICC management. Reinstatement will occur only when the ICC board is satisfied that all required reforms have been fully implemented.
The decision represents one of the most significant governance actions taken by the ICC against an Associate Member in recent years. It also reflects the governing body’s increased focus on transparency, financial accountability, and anti-corruption compliance across emerging cricket nations. Similar action was taken against USA Cricket in 2025, although U.S. teams continued participating in international events.
