India cricket rights sale to be finalised by July: Report

The new media rights deal for international cricket played in India should reportedly be in place by July.

Cricbuzz quotes BCCI secretary Jay Shah as having revealed on Friday that the new deal, for the next cycle of 2023-27, will be signed by July and will kick off with the three-match ODI series against Australia in September.

The BCCI contract with Disney Star ended in March and the Indian board is currently without a formal media partner for domestic bilateral cricket. With a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan planned in June, an interim arrangement is likely to be put in place.

“The BCCI Media Rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely the process will start from the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision,” Shah said.

As per Cricbuzz, the tendering process for the media rights should take at least 45 days and Shah hinted that it should be done by July with the announcement for the Invitation to Tender expected “soon”.

The board secretary has revealed that the board will engage with an external agency on how to go about the tendering process to ensure revenue optimisation.

The BCCI had hired KPMG for the sale of the IPL rights which were sold for a whopping price of Rs 48,390 crore ($ 6.2 billion) last year.
