INTERNATIONAL DANCE LEAGUE (IDL) has announced the launch of its first official competitive season, marking a major step in the league’s mission to position dance as a professional, global sport, according to a media release.
The announcement follows the league’s formal debut and a successful $7 million seed funding round led by Elysian Park Ventures in November last year. Although dance is one of the most widely participated activities in the United States, ranking second only to basketball with more than 26.2 million participants, it has historically lacked a unified global professional league structure.
IDL’s inaugural season will feature six professional dance teams competing across six scheduled regular-season events in New York (USA), Vancouver (Canada), Sydney (Australia), Seoul (South Korea), and two events in Los Angeles (USA). Each event will follow a standardised judging format, culminating in a championship title modelled on traditional professional sports leagues, with a season champion crowned at the end.
The events are designed to combine competitive performances with cultural expression and live entertainment, catering to both in-person audiences and a global digital viewership.
The six founding professional teams include Brotherhood (Vancouver, Canada), Quick Style (Oslo, Norway), Jam Republic (Singapore), GRV (Los Angeles, USA), Royal Family (Auckland, New Zealand), and 1MILLION (Seoul, South Korea).
IDL co-founder and CEO Connor Lim said, “This league was created for dancers, by dancers. IDL represents a new beginning for the sport, creating an opportunity for the best dancers in the world to be rewarded and recognized for their lifelong dedication. We’re excited to empower the next generation of dancers globally and establish a new international standard for professional dance.”
